Local Foods Program

AU is Proud to Support Locally Grown Food

Ashland University is a proud supporter of many local businesses and brands that grow, make and produce products right here in Ohio. This past year, 24% of costs associated with food for Ashland's Dining Services went to locally-based businesses.

AU uses these local vendors:

  • Smith Dairy, located in Orrville, is a local dairy producer founded in 1909. Smith‘s is one of our oldest business partners, providing fresh milk, sour cream and their premium ice cream.
  • Gerber Poultry, located in Orrville, uses no antibiotics, animal by-product feed or antibiotics in the production of their chicken. They run a humane processing center, which has been certified by the Global Food Safety Initiative. Gerber provides AU with fresh quality chicken breast served in all of our dining locations, along with whole chickens for our rotisserie station.
  • Nickles Bakery has been in operation for more than 100 years and serves seven states in the Midwest. They provide fresh breads and bagels six days a week to all our dining locations.
  • Turk Brothers Meats, located in Ashland, provides some of the beef products and all of the ground beef products used in our campus dining facilities. They opened their doors in 1961 and have expanded to include processing specialty meats, such as buffalo, goat and elk.
  • Gordon Food Service provides a wide variety of products for AU dining locations. They have grown from a small local company to a national brand that now provides distribution throughout the United States.
  • Everleaf Aquaponics, located in Shiloh, provides locally grown produce offered at our salad bar and deli.
  • Velvet View Farms, located in Big Prairie, provides yogurt items to AU’s dining facilities. The farm is home to 70 Holstein cows. Each cow has a name and provides about 3,000 gallons of milk per year, which is used to create high quality traditional and Greek Yogurt.
  • Buehler's, located in Wooster, is a local grocery chain founded by Ed and Helen Buehler in 1929. The store continues to be operated by the Buehler family today.
  • Friendly Wholesale Co., located in Wooster, provides all of the candy for the concession areas on campus.
  • Orlando Baking Co., located in Cleveland and in operation for more than 140 years, was originally founded in Italy. They currently produce more than 250 varieties of breads and rolls.
  • Hiller’s Country Market, located in Ashland, is the area's largest cake-decorating and candy-making supplier.
